I am pleased to announce that I was recently appointed to the City of Asheville Planning and Zoning Commission.
The Planning and Zoning Commission is an advisory board to the Asheville City Council. The Commission:
- reviews proposed amendments to the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO)
- hears proposals to change the zoning of property
- performs studies and surveys of present conditions and probable future development in the City
- formulates and recommends the adoption or amendment of a comprehensive plan and other plans
- reviews applications for planned unit developments
- reviews all proposed preliminary plats for major subdivisions
- performs such additional powers and duties as may be set forth elsewhere in the UDO and in other laws and regulations
The Commission is comprised of seven members, and the length of term of office is three years.
As a resident of Asheville over the past 14 years, I have observed the ongoing growth and development pressure that the City continues to experience. Asheville is a desirable location that is frequently listed as a top 10 location to visit, live, and retire. Often referred to as the Paris of the South, Asheville has a rich history and has evolved into an eclectic, vibrant, and active community.
These conditions have led to the complex challenges of accommodating the demand for housing, jobs, services, and infrastructure while preserving the features and environment that make Asheville a great place to live and visit.
I am a firm believer in personal and civic responsibility. It is the small actions that we can all take that can collectively make a difference in our environment and in the world. Choosing to ride a bicycle for short trips, picking up litter, and cleaning up our creeks and public spaces are examples of simple actions that make a difference.
Serving on the Planning and Zoning Commission is another opportunity to make a difference. As a member of the Commission, and with my background as a design professional, I believe that I can contribute to smart-growth decisions that will help guide Asheville into the future to meet competing demands in a way that is inclusive, responsive, and respectful.
